22 Ways to Make Old CDs Awesome Again
August 28, 2009 by James Bent - 41 Comments
As a computer user or a music fan, you are sure to have plenty of those old CDs you store for no reason. Thus, you will be happy to know there are more than 20 ways to recycle them into something really cool:
1. CD Wallpaper
Due to shiny surface, compact discs can make cool water-proof wallpaper:

2. CD Beer-Bottle-Spill-Preventer
This one is rally easy to make: it’s just a CD jammed over the top of a beer bottle to prevent beer from spilling if the bottle falls:

3. CD Lamp
Created by Jim Watters, the lamp consists of about 70 compact discs which account for an amazing plastic glow. Also, be sure to check out the links to other cool CD lamp variations in the bottom of his site:

Here are a few more amazing CD lamps:

4. CD Sculptures
They can be plenty, this is just one example that can make a great decoration for your room wall:

5. CD Chandeliers
Playing with various CD surface colors, you can achieve various light effects. Besides, CD chandeliers can be of various forms – your imagination is your only limit!

6. CD Coaster
The easiest and the most obvious way to recycle a CD is to make a coaster out of it. You can always add some fun to it by drawing a mozaic or a cool ornament:

7. CD Chair
Not sure how comfortable this is, but surely quite eye-catching and extra-ordinary. The only thing, you’ll need the whole lots of CDs for it:

8. CD iPhone Dock
The recycled CD iPhone dock is really easy to make, and will look really great on your desk:

9. CD Disco Ball
CD disco ball can also be in various variations – this one requires 1/2-inch (1-centimeter) CD pieces glued to some kind of a ball or spherical object:

And here’s another variation using whole CDs:

10. CD Hockey
This should be great way to have fun with your friends or guests:
11. CD Room Divider
Organize your CD’s by cover art color or paint them. Then string them up as a room divider.

12. CD Curtain
Just like the above one but used for a bit different purpose:

13. CD Shower Curtain
And in this case, CDs are used to hold and move the shower curtain:

14. CD Lampshade
The lampshade consists of 6 CDs placed at 90-degree angle. Mind the caution note following the instrution: Keep in your mind that the lamp can melt CDs from the heat generated by lamp.

15. CD Christmas Tree
About 80 CDs make a great, festive-looking Christmas tree which is perfectly eco-friendly and obviosly looks awesome when the lights are on:

16. CD Clock
CD clocks are available for sale:

The good news is, you can create one yourself, here’s the instruction:

17. CD Car Decor
They say that some folks believe that placing a CD on the rear or front of your car will confuse the police radar in getting a good read of your speed. Not sure, if that’s the idea of this hack but it does look good:

18. CD Dumbbell
150 CDs, about 75 on each side, on a threaded rod from the hardware store and then (8) bolts to hold it all together. No tools needed. Just thread it all and bolt it tight.

19. CD Photo Frame:
Cut photo into a 3″ circle. Attach it to CD with double face tape. Cover the back of the CD with sticky back felt. Use tacky glue to secure it into a slot in base. And you are done!

20. CD Desk Lamp:
The USB powered LED CD lamp will cost you nothing as it is made of junk and what’s more it saves energy by using 50+ times less power than your regular old CFL lights.

21. CD Boomerang
It’s very small but totally free – why not try?
22. CD Weather Vane

CD coasters are useful and fun…just glue some felt or that nubby rubber shelf liner stuff on the bottom to work as treads and you’ve made a fun, little coaster!
Years ago, I came across a free laserdisc (it was an old sales demo for a defunct car dealership) and turned it into a round high tech looking mousepad that I used as a visual prop for a small publishers’ convention.
To make it, I just cut neoprene (mousepad fabric) into a circle that was roughly 20% smaller in diameter than the size of the laserdisc.
Then I glued my neoprene circle and attached it to the center of the disc so the larger reflective outer part of the laserdisc worked as an eyecatching shimmery border for the mousepad itself.
Took only a few minutes to make, but everyone wanted to know where they could buy our fancy mousepad LOL!

Love love the fish! One thing my ex BF and I did was, take old unwanted cd’s, drill holes in them, mount them with wire to a large rectangle of chicken wire, and go into the driveway, douse with lighter fluid and flambe. The result of this risky experiment was an uber cool semi melted piece of wall art for his loft.
