There’s an old saying “there’s no such thing as a dumb question, just dumb answers”. Well occasionally there are dumb questions, as demonstrated below by Yahoo user “Tim R”.

Have you never heard of Shingles? Perhaps you should Google it.

Dear Wow,
It is obvious that you didn’t read the rest of the words posted with the question. Although people can catch chicken pox more than once, it was obvious that poor Tim R. was not very bright, nor did he have chicken pox. I’ve met people with Shingles, and I know a guy who does not have Shingles, but has had three confirmed cases of chicken pox(not Herpes like Tim R.).

Not to mention he has chicken pox below the waste… ewwwwww.

You can only get chicken pox once. After that your immune system takes care of any new infection before it becomes a problem. Shingles is not a re-infection, but rather a new outbreak of the same virus that originally infected you. It’s DNA has been hiding inside your nerves and occassionally will flare up when it tries to make new virions and release them (from the ends of the nerves in your skin, which causes the shingles reaction).
Just wanted to clear that up. I’m glad someone was able to refer this guy to the doc for a genital herpes test. Geesh.

The above comment isn’t entirely correct. A person can get the chicken pox more than once in their lifetime. The neurons that retain biological information about viruses and other types of infections can sometimes become dormant or, in other words, those same neurons may eventually die. When the memory neurons die, the information about the prior strain of chicken pox is lost as is the genetic information the body uses to fight the infection. In other cases, a person may get chicken pox if the strain is a variant of the one they had in the past. In either case, you can get chicken pox more than once in your lifetime…it’s rare, but it happens.

ive had chicken pox 3 times and im only 19.
i had them once when i was very young 2 or 3 then again when i was 12 and the last time i was 17…
so you CAN have chicken pox more than just the once… or atleast i did =[
