A person can get the chicken pox more than once in their lifetime. The neurons that retain biological information about viruses and other types of infections can sometimes become dormant or, in other words, those same neurons may eventually die. When the memory neurons die, the information about the prior strain of chicken pox is lost as is the genetic information the body uses to fight the infection. In other cases, a person may get chicken pox if the strain is a variant of the one they had in the past. In either case, you can get chicken pox more than once in your lifetime...it's rare, but it happens. The above comment isn’t entirely correct. After that your immune system takes care of any new infection before it becomes a problem. Shingles is not a re-infection, but rather a new outbreak of the same virus that originally infected you. It's DNA has been hiding inside your nerves and occassionally will flare up when it tries to make new virions and release them (from the ends of the nerves in your skin, which causes the shingles reaction). Just wanted to clear that up. I'm glad someone was able to refer this guy to the doc for a genital herpes test. Geesh. You can only get chicken pox once.
