Microsoft Office Art: Excel Portraits, Mosaics and Videos

Excel Portraits
The Excel artist who openly shares his skill here did an awesome job rendering color shades to create portraits in Excel.

Another vivid example:

Black and White Excel Paintings
This one looks like it took plenty of time and effort:

Drawing with Excel
While there’s a simple software to convert photos into Excel format (described here), not all Excel artworks are done that way. This video for example showcases the collaborative art featuring how Google engineers were simultaneously painting snowflakes on a online spreadsheet by filling individual cells with different colors:
Excel Music Video
“The world’s first [and possibly the only one] music video in Excel format” for AC/DC was created by Phil Clandillon and Steve Milbourne, who work at a digital design boutique division of Sony/BMG in London. It can be downloaded from the official site (and opened with Excel) or previewed on Youtube:
Excel Mosaic
Digital artist Danielle Aubert uses Excel to create various mosaics and abstract drawings (he then publishes the collections and sells as print books):

I love it when software is put to uses other than what it was originally intended for. I’ve got to have a crack at this now.

I think the pioneers of finding other uses for software were kids in school who were bored at lunch time. I remember we use to paint things in excel and play a pinball game hidden in one of the MS office applications.
